THE SETTING

Situated just a few short blocks to Montclair’s bustling downtown, this historic center hall Colonial was purchased by the clients as a project.  Inside, the home was clad with original paneling and details juxtaposed by some very dated bathrooms and kitchen.

THE ASK

The clients came to RTH Building Co. with a very clear idea in mind; they wished to modernize this historic home by removing some of the historical elements, and replacing those aspects with reimagined contemporary versions of these details.  RTH Building Company worked with the client on interior layouts and design aesthetics to create a scheme fit for the client’s vision and dream home.

THE RESULT

Based on the initial design discussions with the client, as well as countless revisions of plans, the end result was full interior and exterior renovation, along with a small addition off the back of the home to hold a new mudroom, stairs to the basement, and powder room.

On the interior, RTH Building Co. stripped the original paneling, mouldings, and beams, and designed modern recreations of the 100-year old versions.  To compliment the new trim components, a stunning designer kitchen was installed, and every bathroom in the home was beautifully designed to be light, airy, and functional.  The client’s decided on a dark stain for the hardwood floors that brought a richness to the full house renovation.

As RTH Building Co. approached the exterior of the home, the plan was to remove the old vinyl siding and find what was expected to be clapboard underneath.  Instead, what was found was a surprise for all parties involved – stucco.  The original home must have been a stucco-clad façade, and the client felt it would be a great addition to the overall modern theme.  RTH Building Co. re-stuccoed the entire façade in a beautiful off white, complimented by a soft gray for the shutters and front door. When completed, this center-hall Colonial had the original bones, but was a complete modern adaptation for the client’s desires and vision.
