ELLIS COLONIAL
Transforming an outdated Colonial to an open and airy family home

1/24

THE SETTING

Located in the heart of Montclair, bordering the lovely Erwin Park section, this property was placed on the market for sale.  The interior was heavily outdated, but with its close vicinity to town and some beautiful original details, it was a great opportunity to for a prospective buyer to purchase and put their own spin on the home.

THE ASK

During the vetting process, the eventual owners of the property asked RTH Building Co. to tour the home with them while they were finalizing their purchase decision.  With an at-home business, a large family and a child on the way, they needed to optimize space and renovate the existing first floor to meet their needs.

THE RESULT

After a several month renovation, RTH Building Co. transformed this outdated Colonial to an open and airy family home.  With a focus on the original characteristics of the home, RTH meticulously pulled apart the existing trim and paneling throughout the house to ensure that we could match the existing characteristics exactly in the final product.

To open the home, RTH’s team took down the brick chimney that sat between the kitchen and the dining room.  Brick by brick, from the roof to the basement, we pealed apart the existing structure, leaving a new cavity in the home that allowed for an open floor plan.  To combine the kitchen and dining room spaces, a steel beam was set to support the large span of the new open-concept kitchen.  In the back of the house, the 3-season sun room was winterized and made into a beautiful home office that allows for an at home escape for the owners and their work.

The final touch on the home was the design aesthetic brought by the client. With a focus on eclectic, bohemian style furnishings, the finished interior design effortlessly mix and matches materials, colors, and patterns into a cohesive & stunning living space.
